I want to welcome you back to month nine and week three, and in this week three, we are going to a very, very controversial topic in a way, it is to do with money. I believe the Lord says, “I am Jehovah Jireh, I am the Lord who provides”.
If you remember Abraham and Isaac, God asked Abraham to give up his only son. And then when he goes on to the mountains and was about to put a knife into Isaac, God speaks out of the heaven, and says, “I will provide myself a lamb”. Of course that was Jesus, and God has provided Jesus. And the Bible says how will He not with Him, freely gives us all things.
He is the Lord who provides, He knows what’s in our hearts, He knows the desires of our hearts, and He says if it matters to you, it matters to me. Sometime ago, I put an impossible challenge to God, only God could possibly fulfil this challenge. If you do know me personally, those that are on the course, they know that I love the game of golf, and there’s nothing better than I love to either play golf or try to play it, I’m not a good golfer by any means, but I am very enthusiastic and passionate about this sport. And if you are a golfer, you will understand the longing or the desire to attend the Augusta Masters Golf Tournament. Those tickets are priceless, you see them on eBay for 5 000 dollars for 1 day, 10 000 dollars for the final bid.
Always there are warnings that if you did not get this through legal means you can be rejected when you get to the gate and I don’t have 10 000 dollars and I don’t believe God wants to pay 10 000 dollars to go to the Master’s.
So I asked Him, “Lord, I would love to go to the Masters.” I began to share with others going around and one man said, “I think I can get you to get to the practice day.” The first time that I had the opportunity to go was about three years ago and I couldn’t go because there were no flights, there were no empty seats on any plane going in to Augusta at that time, everything is booked to Augusta years in advance, not just months in advance, or weeks in advance, but years in advance.
All the hotels are fully booked from year to year to year and there’s nothing you can do to find accommodation in Augusta, and you can’t even fly in there, it’s so kind of closed. I had to very much thank the person for the possibility but I couldn’t go. The next year I had a similar experience, somebody else said, “Oh, I can get you a ticket.” I already booked to go preaching and so I continued with the preaching engagement. I said quietly in my heart, “Lord, only You can do this, but I would love to go.”
A few weeks after saying this, I was speaking in a conference alongside a friend of mine called Bill Johnson. I turned to Bill, he was talking about how God wants to reward us. I was saying Bill, “that’s so much on my heart these days, thank you for sharing that and here’s how I want God to reward me.” I said, “I’ve set this challenge, I would love to go to the Augusta Masters Golf Tournament.” He said, “Well if it matters to you, it matters to Father.”
That really put something warm in my heart, that yes, God will do this, and He will do it for me, for little me, for even for me. And so God will do these things for you as well, so think like this, learn to think differently.
I was actually preaching sometime later in Georgia, and it was at the time of the Ryder Cup, the Golf Tournament between England and the United States. As I was staying in the home of a golfer, who was very keen, he wanted to watch the Ryder Cup.
Every time I came back from the meeting, I would sit in one big lazy boy chair and he would sit in the other and I would cheer for England and Europe and he would cheer for America. I happened to mention to him, “Have you ever been to the Masters? He said, “Oh yes, I’ve been, it’s really wonderful.” I said, “Oh, I’ve asked God that I can go one time to the Masters, I really would love to go.” He didn’t say anything, but he got out of his chair and he walked next door. He came back with a very tall, stately-looking man, who said, “I hear you want to go to the Masters. I said, “Well, yes, this is the desire of my heart.” He said, “Consider it done, I am a member.”
I had to tell you that this April, I took, 2-3 days off from helping our son, and I went to the Augusta Masters, and I had the time of my life. It was the most wonderful experience. I can almost see God smiling down on me because he knew how much it meant to me. This is how much your desires mean to God. So if you desire to see somebody to get out of a wheelchair, if you desire somebody to get healed, if you desire to have your house payment paid off, whatever God puts in your heart to have as a desire, then He is the Lord, your provider, He will provide it for you.
